Eligibility Criteria

Most of the banking exams in India usually require graduation from a recognized institution. Fortunately, most aspirants for banking exams fulfill that recruitment. Few exams that are conducted for specialist roles have changing requirements every year and unfortunately are too broad to cover in one article.

1. Nationality – When it comes to nationality, most banks require you to be an Indian citizen. However, some exams also allow citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, and people of Indian origin who migrated from other countries like Pakistan, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kenya, etc. to permanently settle in India.

2. Educational Qualification – At least graduation from a recognized Institution with minimum aggregate marks of 55 to 65 percent

3. Age Limit – For the general category, the age limit for most bank exams varies from 20 to 30 years. However, SC/ST, OBC, and physically challenged people get relaxations on this criteria.

Preparing for SBI Exams

In the SBI exams, candidates are assessed in the following sections:

  • English Language
  • Reasoning Ability
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Professional banking Knowledge

Prelims

Both the clerical and PO exams have three papers during the initial phase – The Prelims. It includes:

  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning Ability
  • English Language

Marks on these papers range from 30 to 35 and the topics covered on each paper are incredibly vast. You get around 20 minutes to solve each paper. You should refer to the question bank from prior years to understand the importance and weightage of each topic.

Mains

For the Mains exam, you get four different papers with different degrees of difficulty depending on the PO and Clerical exam. The papers include:

  • English Language
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning Ability
  • General Awareness
  • English Descriptive Test(for PO exam)

To prepare for these exams you should solve several mock tests and prior year questions to create a general understanding of the difficulty level of each paper. Moreover, you need to have a careful approach since these exams have objective questions with negative marking. If a question tests your confidence, it’s best to avoid it. The Mains paper holds more weight with 40 to 60 marks on each paper with a corresponding duration of 30 to 60 minutes for each.

It’s good practice to create a timetable and allocate a specific duration on each section of the syllabus. Moreover, it’s important to time yourself during mock tests so that you are well prepared for the real exam. You don’t need to attempt all the sections. Judge your strengths and weaknesses and create a study schedule accordingly. Strategize your routine according to the syllabus and on the pattern, you get from the prior year’s questions.

Next Rounds

After you clear the prelims and mains on the PO exam, you have to go through the Group Discussion and Interview where your leadership and intellectual qualities would be tested. When you clear the same round for the clerical exam, you have to opt for the local language test if you can’t produce a 10th or 12th certificate that proves your proficiency in the local language.

Preparations for IBPS Exams

The exam structure and syllabus for the IBPS exam are quite similar to SBI. Like most other major exams for jobs in the government sector, it has a preliminary and mains exam. The key difference for IBPS exams lies in the addition of an extra subject. Here are the subjects for IBPS exams:

  • English Language
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Quantitative Ability
  • General Awareness and banking
  • Computer Knowledge

While the syllabus stays similar to the SBi exams for common subjects, candidates are expected to have a fair knowledge of computers. For instance, you are tested on your understanding of computer hardware, software, operating systems, computer fundamentals, viruses, hacking, memory, the internet, and more.

For the IBPS RRB exam, the subjects remain similar with the addition of the optional Hindi Language paper. Moreover, the difficulty level isn’t as challenging as the clerical and PO exams.

Similar to other banking exams, this one also has negative markings and its own pattern of questions which becomes clear from the prior year’s question papers. Since the syllabus is highly comprehensive, it’s better to adhere to the tips mentioned above in the SBI exam section and create a good preparation strategy.

Preparation for RBI Exams

The Reserve Bank of India is the apex banking institute of the nation and hence demands a lot more from its recruits. The syllabus is quite broad and you are tested on everything from general logical reasoning to the economy and social position of the state.
